మా తండ్రి కీ.శే. శ్రీ గారపాటి వీర్రాజు గారి నుండి నేను కొన్ని మంచి విషయాలు నేర్చుకున్నానని ఘంటాపథంగా చెప్పగలను. అందులో కొన్ని నేనిప్పుడు ఉదహరించదలిచాను.

ఉన్నదానితో సంతృప్తి చెందడం, నాన్న గారి ఉత్తమ గుణం. 'బ్రతకలేక బడిపంతులు' అనుకునే రోజుల్లో, తనకు వచ్చే కాసింత జీతంతో, నల్గురు సంతానాన్ని ఉన్నతంగా తీర్చి దిద్దారాయన. అందుకోసం తన వ్యక్తిగత అవసరాలనెన్నో త్యాగం చేసారు. మాకు ఏ లోటూ రానివ్వలేదు. మా బ్రతుకు తెరువుకు తగ్గ చదువునిచ్చారు. మా జీవనానికి అవసరమైన సంస్కారాన్నిచ్చారు. ఆయన ఒక ఆదర్శ జనకుడు...................................

కీర్తిశేషులు మా తాతగారైన శ్రీ గారపాటి వీర్రాజు గారితో నా అనుబంధం గురించి చెప్పవలసి వస్తే సైకిల్ మీద మమ్మల్ని స్కూలుకు తీసుకువెళ్లిన రోజులు గుర్తుకు వస్తాయి. దారి పొడుగునా మాకు వచ్చే అనుమానాల్ని నివృత్తి చేయడంలో ఎటువంటి విసుగు కనపరచకుండా ఆయన యొక్క ఓపిక నాకు ఇప్పటికే ఆశ్చర్యమే. జీతం వచ్చిన రోజున ఆయన తెచ్చే చెట్టు కింద జిలేబి కోసం ఎదురుచూపులు అదో తీపి జ్ఞాపకం. మా పెరట్లో ప్రతి సీజన్లోనూ చిక్కుడు పాదులు కూరగాయల పాదులు పెంచేవారు వాటికి నీళ్లు పోయడం పొద్దున్నే మా డ్యూటీ అవి కాపు కాసిన తర్వాత వాటిని ఇరుగుపొరుగు వారికి పంచడం అదో డ్యూటీ ఇవన్నీ ఎందుకు చేస్తున్నారో అప్పట్లో అర్థమయ్యేది కాదు ఆయన తనకోసం తాను ఖర్చు పెట్టేది ఏమి ఉండేది కాదు పరోపకారమే పరమావధిగా జీవించేవారు. ఆయన చెప్పిన ఇంకొక విషయం ఉపాధ్యాయ వృత్తి గురించి, ఉపాధ్యాయ వృత్తి అన్నది చాలా బాధ్యతతో కూడిక ఉండదని ఒక టీచర్ విద్యార్థులు అందరికీ మార్గదర్శకంగా ఉండాలని అనేవారు అలా ఉండాలి అంటే వారు కూడా అదే సన్మార్గంలో పయనించాలి అనేవారు అలా వీలుకాని పక్షంలో అసలు ఉపాధ్యాయ వృత్తి లోకి రాకూడదు అనేవారు సమాజంలో డబ్బు సంపాదించాలి అంటే చాలా వృత్తుల ఉన్నాయని అనేవారు. ఈ రోజుల్లో అలాంటి ఉపాధ్యాయులను చాలా అరుదుగా చూస్తాం.

Mr. Garapati Veerraju garu (fondly called by us as thathaygaru) was a true embodiment of equality, a man who understood and acted upon the principle that education is a fundamental right for all, irrespective of gender. Deeply stirred by the injustices faced by women around the world, he recognized the transformative power of education in their lives. He believed that women should be educated and empowered to stand on their own feet.

As a teacher, he understood the transformative power of knowledge—not just for his own children, but for every child in the community. He never hesitated to extend a helping hand whenever it came to education. In a heartwarming gesture, he invited a tuition teacher, from another street, to teach all the children in his street and even offered space in his own home for these classes. His sole aim was to ensure that every child could learn. In a world where many charge for even the smallest services, thathaygaru's heart was selfless. He wanted nothing more than to see children grow into responsible, knowledgeable citizens......................................

During my childhood, my grandfather Shri Garapati Veerraju used to visit our house twice in a year. Similarly, we used to visit him at our native place during our vacations. During these occasions, we spent the most valuable time with him. He used to tell us about the childhood of my father and also about the family values. He always emphasized the value of education. He wanted to see everyone in a better position whether the person is of his family or not. He was more particular about girls' education. He said if a girl is educated, she can educate a total family. I heard from my father that he helped many children to get them educated. He felt unhappy when the young people were wandering without any job and somehow saw that they were properly placed by utilising his known resources. He is a great human being and lives forever in our hearts.
